Which soft pastels do we stock?

In a way the “best” pastel does not and cannot exist! The leading artist quality brands we stock all have in common… to be completely different from one another! A little bit like choosing an H or a 6B pencil are going to give your drawing lines a very different look and the feel in you hand will be radically different too, every pastel maker will boast to have found the perfect softness but, in truth, variety is the spice of life!!

And so…. we stock 180 colours in the Sennelier Pastel “a l’écu” range of… 525 shades. They are very soft and crumbly pastels, we also have many of their lovely sets of full or half pastels and stock a limited range of large and giant ones (so big you think they will not even fit in your hand). We usually have in stock too some sets of Rembrandt pastels, a much harder one, and Schmincke sets in full and half sticks. In a different league, we also stock Conté’s pastel pencils

Which oil pastels do we stock?

In 1949, Picasso, a long-time Sennelier customer and a frequent visitor to their store across the street from the Louvre museum, was looking for a medium that could be used freely on a variety of surfaces without fading or cracking. Their collaboration produced the incomparable Sennelier oil pastels… We thought we’d go for these ones! But then we could not resist adding the wonderful Neopastels from Caran d’Ache and their more fun alterego the NeocolorII which are watersoluble. Then recently Derwent came up with its Artbars, a watersoluble wax bar, and we fell for it too! We also stock however some kids brands and some are also watersoluble, as well as the high quality Stockmar wax blocks and crayons. Continue reading

Which gouaches do we stock?

Gouache, an opaque watercolour, has actually been around for much longer than watercolours. Like it, gouache will not dry waterproof but its colour mass is much more solid looking. We stock Holbein’s “Irodori” gouache, a Japanese company that has been making watercolour for a long time and has many unusal colours in the range, Pébéo’s student range in generous tubes… great for kids (as gouache is non toxic and watersoluble), Senellier’s artist range, their colours are traditional but its probably one of the rare high quality gouache around and the fun to play with Schmincke bronze powders with a dry gouache binder that can marry with all of them.

Which pigments do we stock?

Paint, pencils, inks, watercolours, pastels… all mark making materials are roughly made of 2 things: pigment which brings the colour, binder that holds the pigment together in this or that particular form. If you wanted to invent a colour and make a batch or be a purist and make your own paints (I personally wouldn’t bother about making my own pencils but… up to you) or even if you only want to experiment with pure pigment… we stock a extensive range: Jacquard‘s Pearl Ex powdered pigments, Langridge‘s comprehensive range of 75 dry pigments, Sennelier‘s range of metallic pigments, Schmincke‘s Tro-Col bronze pigments.
